The future of Canadian electric mobility with help from Custom Prototypes

The future of Canadian electric mobility was officially unveiled at the Toronto International Auto Show with the debut of the Borealis, a fully autonomous electric vehicle developed under the leadership of Flavio Volpe and the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA).
The vehicle was introduced by Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, marking a significant milestone for Canada’s advanced automotive sector. The Borealis quickly became one of the standout attractions at the show, drawing industry leaders, policymakers, and international media attention.

This groundbreaking prototype represents the collective strength of Ontario’s automotive supply chain. Built through collaboration among leading suppliers, the Borealis demonstrates Canada’s capacity to design, engineer, and manufacture next-generation mobility solutions domestically.
Custom Prototypes of Toronto was a major contributor to the build of the Borealis prototype. Our team played a critical role in bringing the vehicle from concept to physical reality, providing advanced 3D scanning, large-format 3D printing, and precision finishing of full exterior body panels. From digital data acquisition to final surface refinement, Custom Prototypes delivered essential components that shaped both the structural presence and visual impact of the vehicle.
As a Canadian leader in advanced prototyping and additive manufacturing, Custom Prototypes was instrumental in translating engineering intent into production-ready prototype components — on time and to the highest quality standards required for a public unveiling of this magnitude.
The Borealis signals more than a technological achievement; it represents a strategic direction for Canada’s automotive future. Electrification, autonomy, and domestic innovation are no longer aspirational concepts — they are being engineered and built here in Ontario by Canadian companies.
The era of internal combustion dominance is rapidly evolving. The Borealis points toward a future where intelligent, autonomous electric vehicles redefine mobility — and Custom Prototypes is proud to be at the forefront of making that future tangible.
